Frequently Asked Questions
  • The aim of this page is to answer some of the most Frequently Asked Questions we receive. It will be updated regularly as more questions get asked!

Some questions may already be answered in the Policies And Terms section of the site, but are included here for completeness.

I haven't received payment details yet!

Oh dear, don't worry. You should have received 2 or 3 emails from us when you registered. If you didn't, first of all check your spam inbox (just in case) and then contact our registration team on our info {at} confuzzled.org.uk address.

Can I pay for myself and my friend(s)?

Certainly. Please see below for what you need to do.

    Can I pay in instalments?

As the start of the convention is rapidly approaching, and we need to confirm final numbers of attendees with our venue in the near future, we regret that we are no longer able to accept any requests to pay by instalments.

    How can I pay?

You can pay ConFuzzled in one of four ways. Details such as our account number are only given when you register, via email.

    Bank Transfer

UK members should be able to make a transfer via Online or Telephone Banking. NB: Arranging a transfer in a branch of your bank may incur charges.

Please send us an e-mail (after payment) to info {at} confuzzled.org.uk with the name your bank account is in, how much you've paid and your nickname and registration number, and those of anyone else you may be paying for, so we can reconcile your payment against our bank statement.

    Google Checkout (Recommended)

If you wish to pay by credit or debit card, we recommend you use Google Checkout, as this incurs NO transaction fees.

Unlike PayPal, Google Checkout ONLY allows you to purchase from a "Shopping Basket", so you'll need to visit this page to do so, which will then redirect to Google Checkout.

    PayPal

If you're from a country outside Europe, or if money transfer isn't available, you can send money to our PayPal account.

Just put your nickname and registration number, and those of anyone else you may be paying for, in the Note field on PayPal.

Please see the PayPal Fees page about the associated fees with using PayPal.

Any fees not paid will be asked for at registration.

    At a HSBC UK Branch

Once you've made your payment, contact info {at} confuzzled.org.uk with the name and sort code (if you know it) of the bank branch you paid in at (e.g. The Town, Enfield is 40-20-23), how much you've paid, the date of payment and your nickname and registration number, and those of anyone else you may be paying for, so we can reconcile your payment against our bank statement.

    Is there an age limit?

Yes. By the time of the convention you must be at least 18 years old. Due to the liabilities imposed on us by child protection laws in the UK, we are unable to allow minors to attend the convention.

You MUST present some form of CURRENT photo ID with your date of birth on it at Registration, such as a Passport, Driving Licence, Young Persons Railcard/Coachcard, National ID Card, International Student Identity Card or any cards bearing the Home Office PASS mark.

Note that International Youth Travel Cards and NUS cards (unless they're also ISIC cards) will NOT be accepted, as these do not require proof of age before being issued.

I've lost my password for the website.. help!

Don't panic, email info {at} confuzzled.org.uk and we'll sort it out.

We will only contact you on your main registered email address for data security.

    Why Manchester?

Well, to answer that, we'd suggest you visit our Location And Travel page.

    Why a Youth Hostel?

Well, to answer that, we'd suggest you visit Our Venue page.

£170 is rather steep for a Youth Hostel.

Our contract with the Youth Hostel, and fire regulations, mean that we can only have 144 attendees (including convention staff) and the Hostel staff on site.

As such, we are not able to offer an "attendance only" rate, as we still have to pay for all 144 beds whether they're used or not.

What do I get for my money?

Standard membership includes 3 nights accommodation; registration; all convention activities; a conbook; stickers; a barbecue on Friday night; breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday and Sunday; and breakfast on Monday.

Sponsor membership also includes a "Care Basket", your name in the conbook, pinbadge, T-Shirt and Limited Edition print.

How does this compare with other Conventions?

Well, the UK is more expensive than most countries around the world, so how do we compare?

We'll do a basic cost comparison (excluding transport) if you went for the convention without sponsoring. By the way, we're not meaning to say we're sucky or they're sucky. This is just for comparison.

Cost for ConFuzzled = £170 (US$337.16, €249,03) with accommodation, food and registration.

    Anthrocon = US$45 (£22.69, €33,24) Registration + Hotel (Westin) Costs US$110 (£55.46, €81,25) per night over 3 nights/4 days, divided by however many people, usually 4, so US$127.50 (£64.29, €94,17) overall plus Food

    Eurofurence = €170 (£116.04, US$230.15) for a shared room, or €270 (£184.30, US$365.53) for a Single room, plus Food.

    FWA = US$35 (£17.65, €25,85) Registration + Hotel (Sheraton) costs US$109 (£54.96, €80,51) per night over 2 nights/3 days, divided by however many people, usually 4, so that comes to US$89.50 (£45.13, €66,10) overall + Food

    Further Confusion = US$40 (£20.17, €29,54) Registration + Hotel (DoubleTree) costs US$92 (£46.39, €67,95) per night over 4 nights/5 days, divided by however many people, usually 4, so US$132 (£66.55, €97,50) overall + Food

RBW 2007 = £25 (US$49.58, €36,62) Registration + optional Hotel (Royal National) costs £87 (US$172.55, €127,45) for a Twin or Double Room, or £105 (US$208.25, €153,81) for a Triple Room. So if you opt to stay in the Hotel for one night, that'll work out at £68.50 (US$135.86, €100,35) per person for a Twin or Double Room, and £60 (US$119, €87,89) per person for a Triple Room.

Minamicon 14 (held in the Southampton Novotel) = £47 (US$93.22, €68,85) Registration + Hotel (Novotel) costs £88 (US$174.53, €128,91) per night over 2 nights/3 days, divided by however many people, usually 2, so £135 (US$267.75, €197,76) per person.

Dimension Jump 2007 (held at the Peterborough West Holiday Inn) = £55 (US$109.08, €80,57) Registration for Official Red Dwarf Fan Club Members or £60 (US$119, €87,89) Registration for Non-Members + Hotel costs £57 (US$113.05, €83,50) per night for a Single Room, or £94 (US$186.43, €137,70) per night for a Twin or Double Room, over 2 nights. That works out to £169 (US$335.18, €247,57) for Members, £174 (US$345.09, €254,89) for Non-Members in a Single Room; or £149 (US$295.51, €218,27) for Members, £154 (US$305.43, €225,59) for Non-Members in a Double or Twin Room.

NB: The above figures are converted from the original currency at rates of £1 = US$1.9833 and £1 = €1.4649 and the rates for the US conventions do NOT include Room Taxes (where applicable), which generally range from 5 to 15%.

    What's in the care basket?

The care basket will contain a small selection of food and drink.

Further details will be revealed nearer the start of the convention.

And if your income exceeds the costs?

Should we make a profit from running the event then any money made by the company is required to be reinvested into the company, and will go towards making the next year even better.

None of the staff involved in the running of the convention are being paid and as ConFuzzled is being organised by a not for profit Limited Company, the accounts will be available from Companies House at the appropriate juncture.

I registered before the deadline, why do I have to pay more?

As per our Terms and Conditions, the price you pay is dependent on when you PAY, not when you registered.

This is in line with the policy of other conventions, and means that people registering early and paying a token amount to reserve their place, then the balance closer to the start of the convention, have no financial advantage over those who register after the deadline but pay in full at the time.
